In 1612, in Lancaster, thirteen people were accused, tried and convicted of being witches. Amongst them are names that still live in the folklore that is the story of the witches of Pendle Hill. Of the thirteen, one died in jail, one was sentences to one year in jail, all the others were hanged.William Ainsworth Harrison wove a truly epic fictional novel around the story of these infamous inhabitants of Lancashire. His masterpiece was titled, "The Lancashire Witches" and was published in 1954. Harrison's original is written in the English of the 1850's and uses obscure words and some which have disappeared from the language altogether. Also, the speech of the 'rustics' is in 17th Century Lancashire dialect that most people would find impossible to understand. For this publication the language has been slightly modernise and is more comprehensible without losing the spirit of the times or the characteristics of the people of the day.Firth, Gerald is the author of 'witches of pendle hill - book three - pendle Forest', published 2007 under ISBN 9781847532008 and ISBN 1847532004.
