Phil Richards (left) is a former Indiana Sports Writer of the Year who is in his 21st year with the Indianapolis Star after five years with the South Bend Tribune. He has covered the Colts since 1999 and writes the cover story for the Star's weekly Colts Weekend sections. A native of Alpena, Michigan, Richards is a U.S. Army veteran and a University of Notre Dame graduate. He has covered golf and Indiana University and Notre Dame athletics extensively, including beat responsibilities during IU's 1987 NCAA basketball championship and Notre Dame's 1988 national football championship seasons. He and his wife, Joan, daughter Jenna, and sons Phil and Denton reside in Indianapolis. Mike Chappell (right) has been along for the ride-through the ups and many downs-with the Colts since they arrived in Indianapolis in 1984. He has been the Indianapolis Star's Colts beat writer since 1989, making him one of the nation's longest-tenured writers for the same team. Chappell was on hand for the team's first training camp in Anderson, Indiana, and its first regular-season victory on the road against the Houston Oilers in 1984, its first Indy-based playoff appearance in 1987 and the franchise's first postseason victory in a quarter-century, a 35-20 win at San Diego in 1995 that served as a springboard to the AFC title game. He chronicled the 1-15 travails of '91, three different 3-13 squads, and the 12-4 outfit in 2003 that reached the AFC championship game. Prior to joining the Star in 1984, Chappell was an award-winning sports editor of the Anderson Daily Bulletin.
