Tactical Aircraft Modernization Plans Will Not Reduce Average Age Of Aircraft

As the DoD enters the 21st century, the average ages of its mil. weapon systems & equipment are increasing, primarily because DoD has not routinely replaced equipment purchased during the Cold War era. In Nov. 2000, the DoD was briefed on this analysis of whether DoD's tactical aircraft modernization plans will permit the Navy (incl. the Marine Corps) & AF to reduce the average age of tactical aircraft. During the briefing, the following observations were made concerning: (1) the consistency & reliability of info. used to determine the impact of aging on aircraft, & (2) the extension of the lives of certain aircraft.
