Daniel Ling was born in England and studied audiology and education of the deaf at Manchester University. He directed work in Reading, Berkshire, from 1955 to 1963, where he set up early screening and parent-infant programs, built and modified hearing aids that allowed him to teach children with severe and profound hearing loss primarily through hearing and include them in mainstream school classes. He moved to Canada in 1965 to serve as Principal of the Montreal Oral School for the Deaf, and completed his doctorate three years later at Montreal's McGill University. For the next 20 years, he was Professor of Aural Rehabilitation at McGill University and directed hospital speech and hearing clinics in Montreal. From 1984 to 1991, he was a dean at the University of Western Ontario in London, Canada. Dr. Ling became a Fellow of ASHA, in the 1970s, served as President of the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf in the early 1980s, and was a founding member of Auditory-Verbal International, Inc. In recognition of his international contributions in teaching, writing and research he was appointed as an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1999Daniel Ling is the author of 'Speech and the Hearing-Impaired Child: Theory and Practice', published 2002 under ISBN 9780882002132 and ISBN 0882002139.
