Portraits in Prisons

Summary: Begun in 1995, this project, co-sponsored by The Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, was carried out in trips through more than forty prisons in various European countries. It presents persons among persons, who by showing themselves in public manage metaphorically to regain a slice of freedom, to cancel at least some of the barriers, masks, and labels that separate them from the outside world.
