This featured manuscript is a lavishly illus. account of one of the first Japanese to set foot on Amer. soil. Shipwrecked in 1841 with 4 fellow sailors, Manjiro was brought back to Mass. He spent 10 years in the U.S., both in school & on several further whaling voyages. He earned enough money to pay for the return passage to Japan. Back in Japan, he was subjected to lengthy interviews about his experiences abroad. The story was set down on paper by a professional scribe, illustrated in color & then replicated. The Rosenbach preserves what is believed to be Manjiro¿s own copy of the manuscript. This vol. includes essays on the provenance of the manuscript, its visual text & historical context, form & meaning, & on Manjiro as whaler, navigator, interpreter, etc.Fuller, Elizabeth E. is the author of 'Nakahama Manjiro's Hyosen Kiryaku : A Companion Book: Exhibition Catalogue', published 2007 under ISBN 9781422366523 and ISBN 1422366529.
