Kahlenberg, Educational Leadership , December 2001/January 2002 Spirited litigation regarding school desegregation issues has proceeded in the federal courts recently. This is a brief review of federal court desegregation decisions since the historic Brown case of 1954. The author provides a synthesis of the effects of desegregation efforts in American public schools. 2. Teaching America, Mary Lord, U.S. News & World Report , February 4, 2002 Mary Lord describes the possibilities of the proposal for federal legislation for public schools in early 2002. The accountability requirements for student performance proposed in this legislation are discussed. 3. Immigration's Aftermath, Alejandro Portes, The American Prospect , April 8, 2002 This is a poignant portrait of some of the challenges awaiting and presently confronting the children of recent immigrants to the United States. The importance of educational opportunities for the children of immigrants to the United States is well documented. 4. Affirmative Action: Mend It or End ItBend It, Peter H. Schuck, Brookings Review , Winter 2002 The author discusses issues related to affirmative action policies in American society. How minority citizens have benefited from affirmative action policies is reviewed. The legal problems of current federal affirmative action policies are outlined. The distinction is made between "public" and "private" affirmative action in public policy. 5. Schools More Separate, Gary Orfield, Rethinking Schools , Fall 2001 Gary Orfield attempts to document the increasing levels of racial segregation that have developed in the United States in recent years. This is a synthesis of United States Supreme Court decisions regarding issues related to racial segregation and integration. 6. Educational Demographics: What Teachers Should Know, Harold Hodgkinson, Educational Leadership , December 2000/January 2001 Demographic data on the U.S. population is briefly reported in this article. There are some very interesting social changes under way that have an impact on education. Racial configurations in the population are rapidly changing as are race relations in general in ways that affect the classroom. UNIT 2. Teacher Education in Multicultural Perspective 7. From Racial Stereotyping and Deficit Discourse Toward a Critical Race Theory in Teacher Education, Daniel G. Solorzano and Tara J. Yosso, Multicultural Education , Fall 2001 The authors argue for a critical theoretical appraisal of race relations in the United States. They identify five themes that form the basis for what they describe as "critical race theory" (CRT). 8. Breaking Through Preservice Teachers' Defensive Dispositions in a Multicultural Education Course: A Reflective Practice, Nelly Ukpokodu, Multicultural Education , Spring 2002 Preservice teachers' resistance to multicultural instruction is the topic of this article. It is an urgently important topic because white children are raised to believe that they do not need this. The author relates the problems that instructors encounter in preservice teacher education courses in this area of study. 9. Developing Diverse Faculty in Culturally Proficient Education Programs, Reyes Quezada and Angela Louque, Multicultural Education , Spring 2002 The authors address important issues related to what constitutes multiculturally effective teacher education programs. A model for such programming is proposed. Reyes Quezada and Angela Louque passionately argue that teacher education programs require culturally diverse faculties. 10. Challenges in Multicultural Teacher Education, Amber Carpenter-LaGattuta, Multicultural Education , Summer 2002 Amber Carpenter-LaGattuta argues for a multiculturally relevant approach to teacher education. This is an informative review of multicultural issues in teacher education. 11. Preparing K12 Teachers to Teach for Social Justice, Carolyn M. Ward, Multicultural Education , Summer 2002 Carolyn Ward describes an insightful teaching experience that deals with the concept of social justice with a multicultural focus. This is a detailed lesson plan for the presentation of social justice issues in the classroom. 12. Stories From the Classrooms: How Expectations and Efficacy of Diverse Teachers Affect the Academic Performance of Childr, Susan R. Warren, Educational Horizons , Spring 2002 Susan Warren encourages cultural diversity in the teaching force. She reports that a survey of teacher expectations showed that approximately 25 percent of the teachers interviewed held high expectations for all children. The concept of "teaching efficacy" is examined. UNIT 3. Multicultural Education as an Academic Discipline 13. Twelve principles supportive of effective multicultural relations in schools are presented. 14. Critical Pedagogy: Translation for Education That Is Multicultural, Glenda Moss, Multicultural Education , Winter 2001 Glenda Moss defends the instruction of multiculturalism to graduate-level students against conservatives who claim a "melting pot" perspective. According to Moss, students should be taught to have a critical lens that embraces multiculturalism in the classroom and seeks new ways of teaching. He gives an off-the-charts postmodernistic view of the educational process. It is, however, worth the effort to conquer the rhetorical devices. 16. Class, Cultism, & Multiculturalism, Peter McLaren and Ramin Farahmandpur, Multicultural Education , Spring 2001 The authors relate the concepts of social class, cultism, and multiculturalism to the current struggle to develop truly democratic and liberating perspectives toward efforts to reform multicultural education.
