"Undaunted by the relentless coverage of her subject, Sara Gay Forden, the former Women's Wear Daily Milan bureau chief, sets out to write a definitive, sober account of both the family and the company and the tortuous process through which the two were torn asunder (the family ultimately sold out to Investcorp, an investment bank, which in turn sent Gucci public in 1995). While THE HOUSE OF GUCCI largely succeeds, Forden's writing is often excessively detailed and self-consciously dramatic. At times she seems awestruck by the Guccis and the new management that enables the foundering company to recoup its former glamour. She is most effective when dealing with the life and death of Maurizio Gucci, the last family member to run the company. It is here that Forden's 'sensational' story manages to be just that.
