The Hawaiian Islands have long enjoyed a reputation for warm hospitality, due in great part to the natural graciousness of the people of Hawai'i themselves. The intrinsic values of aloha, welcome, generosity & others, which are so clearly a part of the Hawaiian character, are also those values on which visitor destinations throughout the world depend. WAIAHA Foundation has researched these values & has developed a program called "Tourism - Keeper of the Culture" which trains employees of the visitor industry in the development & perpetuation of those characteristics which make Hawai'i so unique in the world of travel. This book is the first in a series of lessons dealing with the values by which the ancient Hawaiians lived, & the methods by which those same values may be integrated into the hospitality industry. It is intended to be used as a text, not only for employees themselves, but for those who train them. Though the contents of the book have been developed specifically for Hawai'i's visitor industry, the concepts might be adapted to other service areas.
