The authors keep theory to a manageable level throughout the book and concentrate on what is essential to this course. Many concepts are conveyed in an informal and conceptual style and driven by examples rather than presented in a formal definition/theorem/proof style. However, the authors have not abandoned theory in favor of "cookbook recipes"; proofs of major results are presented and much of the standard terminology is used. Indeed, there are many problems in the exercise sets where students are asked to prove something.
