Born in Hyde Park in 1950, his stories are about growing up on the South side of Chicago, and being self-employed in Chicago's Hyde Park, where he opened his first newsstand, the nationally known "Bob's Newsstand", at 51st and Lake Park Avenue at the age of fifteen to pay for his tuition ...at the University of Chicago Laboratory School. He ended up staying in Hyde Park for twenty years, running his newsstands at 51st, 53rd, and 55th Streets on Lake Park Avenue. In 1979 he acquired the famous newsstand on the corner of Randolph and Michigan, right outside the then, Chicago Public Library. In his book he talks about his relationships with his employees, most of whom were senior citizens; his late father, Irving, a World War II veteran and his personal hero; his cancer surgery at the age of eighteen; his education on how to work withing the "Chicago Machine"; and the list goes on.
