From the Introduction: Some years ago I heard a famous English novelist who had just dined with Mr. Hanley exclaim impulsively: If only I could remain for awhile in Oregon and study that man, I would have material for a book that the whole world would read! She couldn't arrange it; but her words burned in my brain. I took upon myself the role of Boswell, and began collecting his utterances. Also I have come into possession of jottings made by him through his later years at the close of days among his cattle and horses and birds on his great ranches, and in the thick of men in busy city streets, concerning things a man may think but seldom speak; sometimes serious, sometimes humorous, always deeply penetrating, and at times so poetically beautiful that I have had to pause in awe before the scribbled sentence found on the back of an envelope, on a telegram blank, on a hotel bill-any scrap of paper across which the stub of a pencil chanced to travel.
