This volume covers the period from the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492 to the coming of the Bourbons in 1700, and concentrates on the themes of the social dimension of religion, in the earlier period, and the political consequences of dynastic change, in the later. The first essays take up the question of 'decline' and, emphasising that Spain's evolution should not be seen in isolation, look at the European context, notably the aftermath of the Thirty Years' War. This context is also reflected in subsequent articles looking outward into the Mediterranean from the Pensinsular agonies of 1492, and studying the social and economic history of Valencia and Catalonia in the 17th century. Of the other articles, a pair continue the theme of religion, dealing with tolerance, the Inquisition, and the pursuit of limpieza di sangre, while the final section concerns the foundations of Bourbon power and includes a detailed study of the use of intendants. This article, along with two others, appears here for the first time in English.
