This volume covers the period from the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492 to the coming of the Bourbons in 1700, and concentrates on the themes of the social dimension of religion, in the earlier period, and the political consequences of dynastic change, in the later. The first essays take up the question of 'decline' and, emphasising that Spain's evolution should not be seen in isolation, look at the European context, notably the aftermath of the Thirty Years' War. This context is also reflected in subsequent articles looking outward into the Mediterranean from the Pensinsular agonies of 1492, and studying the social and economic history of Valencia and Catalonia in the 17th century. Of the other articles, a pair continue the theme of religion, dealing with tolerance, the Inquisition, and the pursuit of limpieza di sangre, while the final section concerns the foundations of Bourbon power and includes a detailed study of the use of intendants. This article, along with two others, appears here for the first time in English.Ce recueil couvre la période allant de l'expulsion de Juifs d'Espagne en 1492 à l'arrivée des Bourbons en 1700, et se concentre sur les thèmes de la dimension sociale de la religion au début de la période et des conséquences politiques du changement dynastique par la suite. Les premiers essais traitent de la question du déclin et, tout en soulignant que l'évolution de l'Espagne ne devrait pas être considérée comme un fait isolé, portent un regard sur le contexte européen, notamment le contrecoup de la guerre de trente ans. Ce contexte transparaît aussi dans les articles suivants, qui se tournent vers la Méditerranée, du point de vue des agonies de la Péninsule en 1492, et qui étudient l'histoire économique et sociale de Valence et de la Catalogne au 17e siècle. En ce qui concerne les autres essais, deux d'entre eux continuent sur le thème religieux, traitant de la tolérance, de l'Inquisition et de la poursuite de la limpieza di sangre, alors que la section finale a pour sujet le fondement du pouvoir des Bourbons et inclut une étude détaillée de la mise en fonction des intendants.
