Sometimes you just try to get along, a little guy in a big pond. You're young, in the center of your luck (the Vietnamese believe in fate, you know), doing okay. And then love shows up. She's the most unlikely woman in the world, but somehow, from that time on, everything you relied on to get through your day is blown to splinters. Hey, that's love and it happens all the time, I suppose. But for me, the time was the mid-60's, and the place was Saigon. Dangerous times, and a dangerous place to lose my head over a girl gone so bad I'd sworn I was going to blow her away. I had my job, Top Secret Codeword crap over at the White Shack on Ton Son Nhut. I had my sworn enemies, the C.O. and a dopey spook who were convinced I was dealing grass to the righteous. (They were right about that. I didn't say I was an angel.) But above all, I suppose, I had attitude. I felt betrayed. Everywhere I looked was a blank space where someone I'd counted on had deserted me. Friends, family, country...what a joke! And Just when you think you've got nothing to live for, something crazy happens. The zips have a word for it, they call it "dinky dao". It means 'bats in the head'. You know, CRAZYHEAD.
