John P. Cogburn was raised in the town of Lafayette, Louisiana. He joined the United States Marine Corps just after graduating high school in 1984. The pinnacle of his service in the Marines was his assignment to the prestigious Marine Security Guard Battalion in Quantico, Virginia, where less than 2,000 marines are screened and selected to serve as embassy guards throughout the world. In 1987 he was handpicked and selected to serve at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, U.S.S.R., following the controversial Lonetree and Bracy espionage scandal that plagued the Marine Detachment. He also successfully served at the consulate general in Istanbul, Turkey, and the embassy in Buenos Aires, Argentina, during his tenure with embassy duty. Sergeant Cogburn received an honorable discharge in 1989. He returned to active duty in 1990 during Operation Desert Shield/Storm, where he served at the Marine Air Station in Yuma, Arizona. In the summer of 1991 he returned to civilian life. Since 1992, John Cogburn has worked in law enforcement in southern Florida. He is presently working as a homicide detective. He has been happily married to his wife Ann since 1994, and they have three children: Katie, Megan and John Junior.
