Aviation Cadet, James F. Bruno, entered the U.S. Army Air Corps in February, 1942 with the blessing of German fighter Ace, Dr. D. H. Bruns, of Milwaukee, WI. Lt. Bruno's correspondence with & the FBI's surveillance of Dr. Bruns held up promotions & advancements during his 50 combat bombing missions out of North Africa. The 99th was a B-17 bomb group. Returning to the States in November, 1943, he was contacted in May 1944 by two FBI agents concerning his relationship with Dr. Bruns. Satisfied no espionage was involved, the embarrassed FBI agents swore him to secrecy that an investigation ever took place. Selected to become one of Captain Robert S. McNamara's "Whiz Kids," he turned down the assignment. A chapter in his book admonishes McNamara for his role involving the U.S. in Vietnam.
