SUMMARY

On Mar. 15 & 16, a multi-species, mass stranding of 17 cetaceans was discovered in the Bahamas Islands Channels. Seven of the animals died & 10 others were returned to the water alive. An investigation into all possible causes of the stranding was launched. This report shows that, based on the way in which the strandings coincided with ongoing naval activity involving tactical mid-range frequency sonar use in terms of both time & geog'y., the nature of the physiological effects experienced by the dead animals, & the absence of any other acoustic sources, tactical mid-range frequency sonars aboard U.S. Navy ships that were in use during the sonar exercise were the most plausible source of the acoustic trauma that the animals suffered. Illus.Hogarth, William T. is the author of 'Bahamas Marine Mammal Stranding Event of 14-16 March 2000 : Joint Interim Report', published 2003 under ISBN 9780756735456 and ISBN 0756735459.
