El protagonista es un abeto que, después de ser protagonista una Navidad, es abandonado y, al final, en sus recuerdos sólo conserva los de su verde juventud en el bosque, aquella Nochebuena en la que fue el centro de atención de todos y el único cuento que oyó precisamente allí. Además de ser una especie de parábola sobre la desesperanza que producen el abandono y el olvido, este relato habla de la costumbre del árbol de Navidad, iniciada en los países nórdicos y que quería recordar el "árbol de la cruz" como contrapuesto al "árbol del paraíso". En esa identificación entre árbol y cruz está el mensaje: ambos dejan sus regalos y, cumplida su misión, desaparecen y no tendrán papel en esa otra vida, en la que sí permanecerán las personas y las historias que protagonizaron.
