The most interesting thing in this book for me was chapter 4: African American Society and Culture. It focused on the root in west and central Africa. Although slavery greatly restricted the ability of African-Americans to practice their original cultural traditions, many practices, values and beliefs survived, and over time have modified and/or blended with European cultures and other cultures such as that of Native Americans. It was amazing to read that black culture from the beginning until now helped to shape America to be what is it and the Black race to continue to grow and expand.

The most useful thing I learned is I was able to use resources the book offers, such as the glossary, the summary of the chapters at the beginning of each chapter, and the study guides at the end of each chapter. My class was a big lecture class where my teacher spoke vaguely about the subject, but having the book made it easier to get the information I needed in great detail. It also used helpful examples. GDP, unemployment rates, and price indices to understand how the whole economy functions was all essential things taught in the book.
