Other research interests include speech development in infants and young children, measuring speech intelligibility and quality, acoustic analyses of speech, and theories of speech production Charles Read is Professor of Linguistics and Associate Dean of the Graduate School at the University of Wisconsin[en]Madison. He directs the Phonetics Laboratory in Linguistics and conducts research on the phonetic foundations of reading and writing. Perhaps best known for his research on children's beginning spelling, Professor Read has also studied how children and adults use prosody in recognizing the syntactic structure of sentences, as well as the linguistic and cognitive skills of adults of low literacy
