Don’t show up to an interview without these 5 essentials

What you bring to an interview is significant for two reasons. The first: having the right stuff with you at an interview can make you feel more prepared and comfortable. The second: whatever you’re holding will have a big effect on your interviewer’s impression of you. So always bring the following:

1. A copy of your resume

Although your interviewer will most likely have your resume ahead of your interview, it can’t hurt to bring an extra just in case. In addition, having your list of experiences for reference can be helpful as you might be asked questions about individual items on your resume.

2. Something to write on/with

Jotting down a few important notes during your interview is wise. It shows the interviewer you’re engaged in the conversation and detail-oriented. But stay organized with a padfolio (like this one), which allows you to store your resume, a pad and pen, and even business cards all in one place.

3. A bottle of water

Dry mouth is a common side effect of nervousness. Bring a bottle of water with you to quench your thirst.

4. Professional attire

There’s no such thing as being over-dressed for an interview. The more professional you look, the better impression you make. For advice on how to dress, check out this blog post for a list of things you should never wear to an interview.

5. A nice purse/briefcase

Lastly, bring all your belongings in a nice purse or briefcase. You don’t want to show up to an interview with too much stuff in your hands. There’s nothing worse than starting an interview with an awkward handshake or by dropping everything.

Best of luck!
