SUMMARY
Chaim Potok was born and raised in New York City. He began to write fiction at the age of sixteen, graduated with a B.A. summa cum laude in English literature, and earned a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Pennsylvania. He is the author of nine novels and two works of nonfiction: Wanderings: Chaim Potok's History of the Jews and The Gates of November: Chronicles of the Slepak Family. His novel, The Promise, was given the Athenaeum Prize, and another novel, The Gift of Asher Lev, won the National Jewish Book Award.
