Educated at Harvard University, Dr. Adams taught at his alma mater and at Massachusetts Institute of Technology before becoming Dean of Colorado College. John G. Barrett has spent three decades on the faculty of the Virginia Military Institute at Lexington, is a Guggenheim fellow, and is the author of several acclaimed Civil War books, including Sherman's March Through the Carolinas, The Civil War in North Carolina, and North Carolina Civil War Documentary. Edwin C. Bearss is chief historian of the National Park Service and the author of many important books on the Civil War, including Decision in Mississippi, Forrest at Brice's Cross Roads, and Hardluck Ironclad, about the sinking and salvage of the Civil War ironclad Cairo. Robert C. Black is a retired professor of history at Colorado Women's College whose special interest has always been transportation. He is the author of The Railroads of the Confederacy. Dee Brown became an internationally known author with the publication of his bestselling history of the Indian, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. But, in fact, he had been a prolific writer of fiction and nonfiction for many years before, his works including Civil War studies such as Grierson's Raid, the story of the North's most dashing cavalry expedition of the war. Frank L. Byrne is one of the few Civil War scholars ever to turn their attention to the prisons of the war. A professor of history at Kent State University, he has written numerous articles on the subject, and continues active research in the field while publishing books on such topics as prohibition and temperance history. Albert Castel has specialized in the war west of the Alleghenies in his books and articles, among them General Sterling Price and the Civil War in the West, Kansas-A Frontier State at War, and William Clarke Quantrell. Dudley T. Cornish, professor of history at Pittsburgh State University, is the author of the classic work The Sable Arm: Negro Troops in the Union Army, 1861-1865. Joseph P. Cullen served for many years as a historian with the National Park Service. The author of numerous articles on the Civil War, he also wrote the National Historical Society's Concise History of the American Revolution and The Peninsula Campaign. William C. Davis, who conceived and edited this work, was for many years editor and publisher of Civil War Times Illustrated and other historical magazines. Among his many works are Breckinridge: Statesman, Soldier, Symbol, The Orphan Brigade, Battle at Bull Run, and The Imperiled Union, 1861-1865. Norman C. Delaney has made the story of the Confederate commerce raiders the object of intense investigation for many years. A professor at Del Mar College of Corpus Christi, Texas, Delaney is the author of John McIntosh Kell of the Raider Alabama. Charles Dufour, past president of the Louisiana Historical Association and one of the founders of the Civil War Round Table, is a New Orleans native and retired newspaperman, and the author of eight books, three of which dwell on the Civil War. William A. Frassanito, chief photographic consultant for this work, is one of the foremost historians and interpreters of Civil War photographs. Charles R. Haberlein, Jr. is Photographic Curator and Historian at the Naval Historical Center in Washington, D. C., the nation's finest collection of naval illustrations. He has been of inestimable assistance with naval matters in the production of this work. Warren W. Hassler, Jr., longtime professor of history at Pennsylvania State University, is a highly regarded and prolific historian in the field of American and Civil War military history. Herman Hattaway of the University of Missouri at Kansas City won the Jefferson Davis Award for the best book in Confederate History with his biography of General Stephen D. Lee. Leslie D. Jensen, Curator of Collections at Richmond's Museum of the Confederacy, is a specialist in Confederate uniforms and equipment. Ludwell H. Johnson III has been for many years a professor of history at the College of William and Mary and a noted specialist in the Civil War. Frank J. Merli is a professor of history at Queens College. Parrish, author of The American Civil War, is professor of modern history at the University of Dundee, Scotland. Frederic E. Ray is art director of Civil War Times Illustrated and American History Illustrated, as well as serving as a photographic consultant for this work. His Alfred R. Waud, Civil War Artist, is one of the foremost biographies of the legion of battlefield artists who followed the armies. Rowena Reed, professor of history at Dartmouth College, is the author of Combined Operations in the Civil War, a major reassessment of Army-Navy cooperation during the war and the opportunities won or lost because of it. J. Jackson, Mighty Stonewall. Russell F. Weigley is one of America's most distinguished military historians. A professor at Temple University, he is the author of Quartermaster General of the Union Army, a biography of General Montgomery C. Meigs, History of the United States Army, and Eisenhower's Lieutenants: The Campaign of France and Germany, 1944-1945, among many other distinguished works. Bell I. Wiley was preeminent among Civil War historians, with more than fifty books to his credit. The story of the common people of that era was his chief interest, and his two works The Life of Johnny Reb and The Life of Billy Yank have become classics. He also served as chairman of the Board of Advisors of the National Historical Society. T. Harry Williams achieved a reputation as one of the foremost American historians of our time. His biography Huey Long won him the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. He was, however, best known for his work on the Civil War, including Lincoln and the Radicals, Lincoln and his Generals, P.G.T.
