AUTHOR

Brazelton, T. Berry, Sparrow, Joshua D.

SUMMARY

T. Berry Brazelton, M.D., founder of the Child Development Unit at Children's Hospital, Boston, is Clinical Professor of Pediatrics Emeritus at Harvard Medical School. Currently Professor of Pediatrics and Human Development at Brown University, he is also past president of the Society for Research in Child Development and Zero to Three: The National Center for Infants, Toddlers, and Families. A practicing pediatrician for over forty-five years, he introduced the concept of "anticipatory guidance" for parents into pediatric training. The author of over 200 scholarly papers, Dr. Brazelton has written thirty books for both a professional and a lay audience, including Touchpoints (translated into eighteen languages), To Listen to a Child, and the now-classic trilogy Infants and Mothers, Toddlers and Parents, and On Becoming a Family. His television show, "What Every Baby Knows" has run for fourteen years and won an Emmy and three Ace Awards. To continue his important research and implement its findings, Dr. Brazelton founded, and co-directs two programs at Children's Hospital: the Brazelton Institute (furthering work with the NBAS) and the Brazelton Touchpoints Center (training health and child care professionals across the country in the Touchpoints preventive outreach approach). Dr. Brazelton, who has served on the National Commission for Children appointed by the U.S. Congress, is the recipient, among his very numerous awards, of the C. Anderson Aldrich Award for Distinguished Contributions to the Field of Child Development, given by the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the Woodrow Wilson Award for Outstanding Public Service from Princeton University. Joshua D. Sparrow, M.D., Instructor in Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School, is Supervisor, Inpatient Psychiatry, Children's Hospital, Boston and Associate Director for Training, Brazelton Touchpoints Center at Children's Hospital. He has held appointments in psychiatry at the School of Medicine, University of Marseilles, France. Dr. Sparrow also has co-authored articles with Dr. Brazelton for the New York Times Syndicate, and lectures on child development nationally and internationally. The Brazelton Foundation supports and expands the training programs begun by Dr Brazelton. These programs train healthcare and childcare professionals in a new model of preventive healthcare and positive relationships between the provider, the child, the family and community.
