SUMMARY

BioQUEST Library, Volume V The BioQUEST Library is an annual peer-reviewed publication of computer-based curricular materials that brings together more than 60 software simulations, tools, datasets, and other support materials, including manuals for most modules, in ecology, evolution, genetics, molecular biology, physiology, developmental biology, botany, and neurobiology. The modules in The BioQUEST Library have been designed to provide a flexible problem-solving space for investigations that can range from the simple to the sophisticated and challenging. In each of the modules, the students are expected to craft a research question, to pursue solutions to their question, and to decide on criteria for closure and publication, just as academic and professional scientists do. The materials included in The BioQUEST Library are designed to provide a robust problem space in which students can pursue multiple hypotheses simultaneously and generate and analyze large datasets. The modules are open-ended and enable students to evaluate their problem-solving endeavors as well as the validity and utility of their solutions. BioQUEST Curriculum Consortium The BioQUEST Library is a publication of the BioQUEST Curriculum Consortium (bioquest.org), a community of more than 5000 bioscience educators and researchers who are interested in undergraduate science curriculum reform. The BioQUEST Curriculum Consortium offers a framework for thinking about curricular issues in science education from the viewpoint that students learn science most effectively when they are provided with opportunities to solve complex problems using the same methodologies and reasoning skills that research scientists use. The BioQUEST Library provides students with the opportunity to develop the long-term strategies of inquiry that sustain and guide practicing scientists. This philosophical framework has become known as BioQUEST's three Ps of science education: problem posing, problem solving, and peer persuasion. Site licenses for the BioQUEST Library are available to universities, college libraries and departments, high-school districts, and individual high schools.
