Gene M. Florence, Jr., a native Kentuckian, graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1967. He held a double major in mathematics and English that he immediately put to use in industry and subsequently, in teaching junior and senior high school. A collector since childhood, Mr. Florence progressed from baseball cards, comic books, coins, and bottles to glassware. His buying and selling glassware "hobby" began to override his nine-year teaching career. In the summer of 1972, he wrote a book on Depression glassware that was well received by collectors in the field, persuading him to leave teaching in 1976 and pursue the antique glass business full time. This allowed time to travel to glass shows throughout the country, where he assiduously studied the prices of glass being sold... and of that remaining unsold. Cathy Gaines Florence, also a native Kentuckian, graduated with honors and a coveted voice award from high school, attended Georgetown College where she obtained a French major and an English minor, then married her middle-school sweetheart Gene Florence. She taught four years at the middle school level, then worked part-time while raising two boys. It was then that she typed her husband's first manuscript, written in "chicken scratch." The first three or four letters of each word would be legible and then it was up to her to guess what the last was. To their astonishment, the book sold well and a new career was born for her husband and their lives took different turns from the teaching careers they'd planned. In the mid-80s she authored a book on collecting quilts, harking back to skills taught her by her grandmothers; and she has since co-authored books on glass with husband Gene. Books written by the Florences include the following titles: The Collector's Encyclopedia of Depression Glass, Stemware Identification, The Collector's Encyclopedia of Akro Agate, Pocket Guide to Depression Glass and More, Kitchen Glassware of the Depression Years, Collectible Glassware from the 40s, 50s, and 60s, Glass Candlesticks of the Depression Era, Anchor Hocking's Fire-King and More, three volumes of Florences' Glassware Pattern Identification Guide, Florence's Big Book of Salt and Pepper Shakers, Standard Baseball Card Price Guide, six editions of Very Rare Glassware of the Depression Years, and Treasures of Very Rare Depression Glass. Gene has also written six volumes of The Collector's Encyclopedia of Occupied Japan and a book on Degenhart glassware for that museum. Mr. and Mrs. Florence's most recent books are Florences' Glass Kitchen Shakers, 1930 - 1950s, and The Hazel-Atlas Glass Identification and Value Guide.Chambers Harrap Publishers Staff is the author of 'Webster's New World Concise Spanish Dictionary', published 2003 under ISBN 9780764541599 and ISBN 0764541595.
